Most asked questions

Do skylights really help balance sleep cycles?

Parts of our external environment, such as the sun, sets the phase of our circadian cycle. When the sun rises, we tend to wake up even if we didn't sleep a full eight hours. Skylights help bring in natural light to your space to balance your circadian rhythm, which controls everything from your sleep patterns, appetites, and brain activity.

I have central air, do I really need a venting skylight?

A venting skylight can help your air conditioner work less. Opening the skylight helps to remove warmer air trapped at the top of your ceiling, lessen the amount of cool air needed to be produced by an air conditioner.

Is there any way to control the amount of light from the skylight?

Yes, there is! VELUX offers over 60 different shade options, letting you select your amount of light control, style, and color that fits your bedroom décor. We recommend taking a look at our double-pleated light filtering shades for your bedroom.

How do I clean the outside glass on my skylight?

By upgrading your skylight glass to Standard Safety Glass (comes standard on some skylights), your skylight will do the work for you. Any debris that lands (or decomposes) on the outside skylight will be broken down by our Neat glass coating and washed away with the next rain.

If I open my skylights, what about bugs?

We've all been there with the dreaded fly stuck in the car dilemma, and imagining that in your bedroom seems worse. Luckily, your venting skylight comes with the option for you to add an insect screen to keep those pesky critters out while letting all the clean air in.

Where should I put my skylight?

Knowing where to install your skylight has it challenges and depend on certain elements of your home. We know this, which is why we've partnered with certified VELUX skylight professionals who will survey your home and offer you their advice on the best spot for your skylight. I heard skylights leak, is that true?

When skylights first came out, they were prone to leaks which gave them a pretty bad name. Nowadays, with the advancement of technology, VELUX manufactures skylights with a three-layer water protection that prevents any leaks. Plus, we added an installation warranty to all products installed with our skylight flashing system. Learn more about our warranties.
